Does Exercise Really Boost Your Immune System?
We at Clear Cut know that a regular exercise/gym routine significantly improves one's immune system, I'm sure you've heard it before, It's not just a myth. We’re currently living in a time where a healthy lifestyle and exercise to boost your immune system is desperately needed.
The benefits of exercise on the immune system..
The earliest exercise immunology studies (1900–1979) focused on exercise-induced changes in basic immune cell counts and function. But I actually found a few studies from 2020 that give more detailed information on HOW it helps the immune system. (yes that's right, around a year ago) juuuust before Covid - what a coincidence.
Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.
Exercise causes change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the body's immune system cells that fight disease. These antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they could detect illnesses earlier than they might have before.
The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from growing. This temperature rise may help the body fight infection better. (This is similar to what happens when you have a fever.)
Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. Some stress (larger more prolonged bouts) can increase the chance of illness. Lower stress hormones may protect against illness.
It’s easy to think of exercise as a tool to get your body looking fit and attractive - after all, it’s what you see on social media everyday - but it’s so much more than that. Maybe you also associate exercise with a healthier heart. There was a big push for that the past 15 years and it’s true. But there are so many more benefits than just that. There are so many more benefits to resistance training specifically that aren’t mentioned regularly. Just so happens that improved immune function is one of them.
